Paris-FRANPRIX is a single screen video work, and a legacy of the ciné-verité/surrealism of Georges Franju. It is exhibited in a darkened space entered through a pvc strip doorway, as used for entry to the backroom of supermarkets. Paris-FRANPRIX reaches into the lap of death, into the crumbling 20th arrondissement Paris and its local supermarket franchise.
The unsolicited social and economic networks that surround a supermarket become a site for looking at memory, respect, and hope as the product is followed from its 8am bulk delivery to its 8pm disposal and eventual consumption. A regular consumer passes on her intimate wisdom. Her love for the street folds back onto her body as she pronounces her street and situation completely dead.
The world is sadder than we choose to think, just as there is more poetry in it than we dare to find. The sad isolation of objects in Paris-FRANPRIX creates a world mood in which hope and joy very quietly, almost occultly survive. Trudy Oman-Grand, Jan 2003.
